Part of being fluent in a language is understanding the culture. A huge part of culture is food. Anthony Bourdain even said “Food is everything we are. It’s an extension of nationalist feeling, ethnic feeling, your personal history, your province, your region, your tribe, your grandma. It’s inseparable from those from the get-go.”
If you don’t understand that quote, I will simply say that food=culture. And America has a huge culture around food. So to help you understand our culture a bit better make sure you know these five American foods.
1. Ranch Dressing
Yes we could put this food on anything! We do everything from dipping fried foods in ranch to putting it on our “healthy” salads. I’m not sure if this is a taste that you must learn to like, but Americans sure seem to like ranch dressing over any other sauce.
Okay, maybe this one is not exclusive to Americans, who doesn’t love delicious greasy bacon? Unless you don’t eat pork, you must like the taste of bacon. It’s not just a breakfast food here though, just like ranch dressing Americans love to add bacon to things like burgers, salads, sandwiches, and potatoes.
This may be the most famous American food. You can find Cheeseburgers at almost any restaurant in the United States. From inexpensive fast food to gourmet restaurants, you can find a delicious cheeseburger.
4. Peanut Butter
I have heard from foreign born friends that they get sick of Americans putting peanut butter on everything! We love it, peanut butter desserts, candy, sandwiches. Peanut butter goes great on lots of foods including apples and celery. Try a classic American children’s snack “ants on a log”, which is peanut butter on celery with raisins. If you request this people will think you spent your childhood in the United States.
5. Hot Dogs
Americans love hot dogs so much that we have a famous competition on the 4th of July (America’s Birthday) to see who can eat the most. It is rather repulsive if I am being honest. But a tasty american food that is most often eaten in the summer.
Have you visited America? What is the craziest American food that you heard of? Which foods on this list would you love to try. Leave me a message and let me know!
